When the makers of the “CobraHead” weeder/cultivator asked me if I wanted to demo one, I said that I would be delighted to try it. I already knew other Master Gardeners who swore by them and now I would finally have my own! (Not that I’m too cheap to buy one at $24.95 – I just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.)
There are several things about this tool that appeal to me:
- It’s light, so it doesn’t weigh down my tool bag (like my mattock)
- It does a bunch of things, including weeding, cultivating and transplanting – multitasking is good
- It’s made in the USA… by a small family business…from recycled plastic and flax fiber!
- The head is steel, and therefore durable
- The blue handle won’t disappear in my garden
I have already used it to scrape mud off my gardening shoes, and it’s supposed to be great for edging. I’m sure I will be “testing” it throughout the growing season.
One possible drawback to the CobraHead, especially for lazy gardeners, is that the steel head is not stainless. Unlike my ungainly mattock that shrugs off dirt and moisture, you actually have to clean and dry it after use.
Am I the last gardener on earth to get one of these? Do you have one? Do you love it, or is yours languishing, unused in the garage? I’ll let you know how often I use mine, and whether my mattock gets an early retirement.
Digging RI 
This is a new tool to me. The bright blue handle is appealing since I spend a lot of time looking for green-handled tools. Tying a red ribbon on the tools helps me locate them. It would make sense to just go ahead and paint them red.
A friend has a similiar tool, but it’s long, like a hoe. She loves it.

I like the blue, too. It’s almost impossible to lose (fingers crossed).
It’s also light, unlike my mattock. Guess you’d better get one, CJ!

My favorite tool! Don’t worry about the blade. Mine is about 6 years old and good as new…I don’t clean it much either. Also, it truly is the best edging tool I’ve ever used.

That’s good to know. I’m going to use mine for edging next weekend. I sure hope it makes that job easier, because I hate doing it!

Okay, DN, I’m counting on you to provide a report on how you liked this tool for edging. Like you I hate the process but am willing to try almost anything. I do have an electric edger but I’m just too lazy to haul it out of the garage and hook it up…plus I’m not very good at keeping the edges straight! :O

I edged my heart out with it yesterday and it worked like a charm. The head cuts easily and deeply, and it’s light, so your arm doesn’t get too tired. The only thing is you have to get down on your knees in order to use it properly – unless you want to wreck your back. This is now my go-to edging tool.

Just spent an hour or so in my perennial garden with this tool, and I can’t thank you enough for turning me on to it! Bravo, makers of CobraHead! Edging is always a problem in this garden, mainly because it’s huge. I also have difficulty with grass that likes to spring up among the plants. This tool worked great in both areas, and the only reason that I quit was that it started to rain.
It was well worth the price! Let us know if CobraHead comes up with any more innovative tools; they will be on my wish list!

I’ve been using mine for edging, too – and weeding of course. It’s light, so my arm doesn’t get tired as quickly.
