Whenever I travel, I try to take a few good walks. It’s the best way to see how people live – and of course, for a gardener, what they are growing. First, though, here’s a gratuitous shot of the Richelieu river that flows by the town of Mont St Hilaire – just because it looked so beautiful that morning. On to the plantings. Someone limbed up this immense tree, so now it looks like a giant lollipop next to the house. What a shame. Something as old as this deserves our respect.
I liked how this house, while pink, was comfortably nestled in the woods, and looked like it belonged there. I also like the natural plantings instead of a lawn.

The lilacs are done here in RI, but they were peaking in Quebec, and the scent was wonderful.
They had recently built new sidewalks, but a squirrel had managed to make its mark. Right on, my rodent friend. Immortality is yours.

Charming travelog. Long ago I remember staying with relatives in a small town outside Montreal – such lovely a green space. Thanks for jogging my memory. How are the weeds up there? Ha.

Oh, how I miss lilacs! Here in the south, wisteria substitutes for lilacs, but still…
Isn’t that sidewalk a lot more interesting with the squirrel tracks? Love it!!

You don’t have lilacs in the south? They are fleeting here, but worth planting anyway, I think. Now that I think about it, Lilacs might be worth a post. As for the squirrel tracks, I think they make the concrete infinitely more interesting.

By chance I visited Mont St. Hilaire last year with our MG Car Club. The view from the south side, looking towards the US was spectacular. From there we headed north up the river for about 20 miles to a village called St. Denis. There we took a little ferry to the others side. We stopped for lunch at the Handfield Inn which was very enjoyable. Then on to Beloil.
There certainly is a lot of history on this river since it was once used buy the British, the French and the Americans as a major thoroughfare between Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence. But that is an entirely different subject.
Certainly, with all the farming in the region the route is as pleasant as you might find anywhere.

Gorgeous photos. I visited many places when I lived in Quebec, but Mont St. Hilaire is not one of them. It’s too bad because it looks like such a lovely place. Too bad about that tree. It really looks like a giant lollipop! What a shame.
