This has been the view from my office during the four nor’easters we have had so far in March. The first one was the worst for us, because we lost power. The second brought about a foot of snow. The third and fourth brought varying degrees of snow, wind, ice, rain and annoyance.
Here are my first crocuses, the day before one of the storms – I can’t remember which.
Here are the same crocuses 24 hours later, as the storm was beginning. I know they can survive these storms, but they do get mushy.
The first storm was very windy. This large pine came down across the road, inches from my husband’s car as he was driving home. Those are his car’s headlights in the photo, after he quickly reversed. It really was quite scary, because we weren’t sure if more trees were going to fall.
Dog-owners have to venture outside, no matter what. This was the scene that greeted me on one outing. It was during that brief period when the plows were waiting before clearing the roads, and everything was still white. When I was a kid back in Quebec, we’d all be out playing in this until our mothers yelled at us to come inside.
With her thick double coat, my dog really enjoyed just lying in the snow, wearing a blissful expression.
I made sure to get out the next morning as the sun was coming up. I knew the light would be optimal, and it was.
All that snow has melted, of course. It’s amazing how quickly weather can transform the landscape.

They certainly do! The worst part was, he was bringing home a pizza because we had already lost power, but the tree prevented him from getting through to our house. Being a practical – and hungry – woman, I met him at the fallen tree, took the pizza and drove back home. He had to drive all the way back to town to get dinner.

Egad, your husband and tree, scary for sure. We lost a 90 ft Oak and it felled 3-4 other trees. No one hurt or killed, no structures hit. Your family and mine have much to celebrate. Ironic because you and I treasure trees, now they’re rebelling, lol.

I’ve been thinking that too. The tree situation is bad around here, and even those that are healthy are being removed because people are so afraid they’ll fall on their homes. Sorry about your oak, and the other trees it took with it. Yikes!

I’m sorry that you have had such a hard time with these storms! I was born and raised in RI, and lived most of my life there. Around 2005 hubby and I sold our house and packed it in storage. We loaded our 42′ sailboat and headed South. After cruising, we settled in Virginia. We’re on the coast, so it’s warmer here, but we have had an awful winter…for us! Lots of rain and wind, snow, sleet and just miserable and cold. My worst experience for weather in RI was the Blizzard of 1978. I was 3 months pregnant with my first child, and had taken the day off. My Angels were watching over me! I’m basically saying that I love RI, but I don’t miss those winter’s!! I love your blog, it gives me a taste of ” home”. Keep up the good work! 🙋🙋

Thanks for writing, Cindy! So glad you found my blog. I have heard many stories about the Blizzard of ’78, which was before I moved here. I guess you already know that the RI tradition of stocking up on milk and bread began with that storm!
And speaking of stocking up, are you aware that Benny’s closed this year? It’s so sad to see all those empty stores.

Hi there! Yes, my son told me about Bennys, and I was very sad to hear about it! We were always running to Bennys for one thing or another. Also, we bought the kids bikes there. Didn’t everyone?? LOL. I plan to do my usual visit this summer to see my son’s and grandchildren. I do hate being so far away. Spring has finally sprung here! It’s going to be 82° today! Take care.
